Saint Therese and the Roses
Recommended. Age: 9+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.
Our review
This is the Little Flower as a little sister. It shows that holiness starts at home, in small sacrifices nobody sees, which is exactly what the Church honors in her. The reservation is tone. Some adult readers find it sugary and Therese too perfect, and one links that picture to later scrupulosity. Tell your child that saints struggled too.
For parents
Read aloud from 6 or 7, independent reading from 9. Seton places it in grade 4, and Ignatius says 9 to 15. Ask what one small thing Therese did for love that no one noticed. Ask whether a saint ever has bad days, then read about her own stubbornness in Story of a Soul.
