Our review

A poor farmer in Tennessee drinks and fights until he turns back to God. When war comes, he must decide if a man of faith can fight. He becomes a famous hero but stays humble. This is a true story about a man whose faith changes his life and then is tested by war. York turns from drink and revenge to his church, struggles honestly with Scripture over killing, and refuses money for doing his duty. Expect World War I battles with much shooting but little blood, two bar brawls and two mild curses. The one age is 13 and up, set by Lumen for the battle deaths, because no Catholic classification or Common Sense age could be fetched.

For parents

Our one age is 13 and up, set by Lumen for the battle deaths. No Catholic classification or Common Sense age could be fetched, and the 1941 film carries only a Production Code 'Approved' certificate. The IMDb Parents Guide lists battle deaths with little blood, two barroom fights and two mild curses. Things to talk about: York's faith is shown in a Protestant mountain church, so the film says nothing about the sacraments. His question is a real one. Can a Christian go to war? The Church teaches that legitimate defense can be a duty, and also honors the conscience that refuses to kill. Ask: what changed York on the road that night? Why did he refuse the money after the war? What made him humble when everyone called him a hero?
