Sing
Caution. Age: 18+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.
Our review
Buster Moon is a koala who runs a theater that is losing money. He holds a singing contest to save it, and shy, stuck or troubled animals try out. When things fall apart, they put on the show anyway and find their courage. The music is fun and the courage is real, but the film treats a teen couple living together as normal, rewards a hero who lies, and makes chasing your dream the rule of life. The one age is 18, set by the Catholic News Service rating of A-III; Common Sense Media says 7+ and the MPAA says PG.
For parents
One age: 18, set by the Catholic News Service (A-III, adults). Common Sense Media says 7+ and the MPAA PG, so the gap is large; Lumen rates it Caution and parents decide. The Catholic reviewer flagged an unmarried couple living together (teen porcupine Ash and her boyfriend), a semi-cross-dressing character, scatological humor and peril. Plugged In adds a striptease-like reveal by Gunter the pig, suggestive rabbit dancers and a club where animals drink martinis. Common Sense Media notes Buster lies to everyone and still comes out fine, and Mike cheats bears at cards. If your children see it, talk about it: Was Buster right to lie to save his theater? Should he have said sorry? Why did Johnny refuse to steal the money? Is following your dream ever more important than doing what is right?
