Our review
Juan lives near the old mission at San Juan Capistrano. He and his friend Julian, the bell ringer, love the swallows. Juan plants a garden, and on Saint Joseph's Day the swallows come back and the bells ring. A gentle Caldecott winner set in a Catholic mission, with love for God's creatures and a feast day at its center. One age: 7+, set by Lumen's read-alone age; no publisher age was found.
For parents
Age 7+, set by Lumen's read-alone age; no publisher age was found. Read it aloud from 4. Tell your child who Saint Joseph is and why the village keeps his feast. Julian tells Juan the mission's history and names Father Junipero Serra; it is a good moment to talk about him.
