Acceptable with guidance. Age: 7+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

Spirit is a wild horse who leads his herd in the American West. Soldiers catch him and try to tame him, but he will not give up. With his Lakota friend Little Creek and a mare named Rain, he finds his way back home. It is a beautiful, exciting horse story about courage and friendship, with a lot of peril and some harsh treatment of animals. The one age is 7, set by Common Sense Media (7+); the MPAA says G and no Catholic classification was found.

For parents

One age: 7, set by Common Sense Media (7+). The MPAA rating is G and we found no Catholic classification. Common Sense Media and Plugged In list frequent peril: a mountain lion attack, soldiers beating and starving Spirit, a mare shot and swept over a waterfall, a train crash and a forest fire. A sleeping soldier has a liquor bottle beside him, and a couple of curses are cut off mid word. The cavalry are the villains and the Lakota are shown as brave and kind. Talk about it: Is freedom the same as doing whatever you want? How did Spirit and Little Creek learn to respect each other? Was the Colonel right to try to break Spirit by cruelty? How should we treat animals God made?
