Stone Soup
Acceptable with guidance. Age: 7+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.
Our review
Three hungry soldiers come to a village where the people hide their food. The soldiers say they can make soup from stones. One by one the villagers add carrots, meat and more, and everyone shares a big feast. It is a fun lesson that sharing makes a feast, and Catholic homeschool families have long used it. But the soldiers get there by fooling people, and the book never says that is a problem. A parent should say it. One age: 7, set by Lumen's read-alone age; the publisher says 4 to 8.
For parents
Age 7+, set by Lumen's read-alone age; the publisher says 4 to 8. Read it aloud from 4. The soldiers fool the villagers, and the story calls it clever. Ask: was it right to hide the food? Was it right to fool them? Jesus fed the hungry without tricks.
