Story of a Soul

1898 · St. Thérèse of Lisieux · Spiritual autobiography

Recommended. Age: 14+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

A Doctor of the Church shows that holiness is within reach of small souls. Thérèse offers no great deeds, only trust like a child's, hidden sacrifices and love poured into ordinary duty, held firm through illness and darkness. The reservation is style. Her sweet nineteenth-century French manner can hide how strong and demanding the Little Way is.

For parents

Independent reading from 14; chosen chapters read aloud from 10 for a child who knows her story. Pick an edition taken from her original manuscripts. Ask what one small sacrifice today could look like. Ask how Thérèse kept trusting when she could not feel God.
