The Story of Johnny Appleseed
Acceptable. Age: 7+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.
Our review
John Chapman travels west. He plants apple trees wherever he goes, and people call him Johnny Appleseed. A simple frontier legend about giving freely, even when the gift is small. We could not confirm whether it names Chapman's church. One age: 7+, set by Lumen's read-alone age; the publisher says 4 to 8.
For parents
Age 7+, set by Lumen's read-alone age; Simon & Schuster lists 4 to 8. Read it aloud from 4. Much of Johnny's story is legend. If the book mentions his faith, note that the real John Chapman followed Emanuel Swedenborg, whose church is not the Catholic Church. Ask your child what they could plant or give for others.
