Our review

Sylvester the donkey finds a red pebble that makes wishes come true. When a lion scares him, he wishes he were a rock, and he cannot wish himself back. His mother and father look and look for their only child. The wishing pebble is a fairy-tale device, not a charm to copy, and the heart of the book is a family's love. Recommended at +4. One age: 6+, set by Lumen's read-alone age (Common Sense Media says 4+, the publisher 4 to 7).

For parents

Age 6+, set by Lumen's read-alone age; Common Sense Media says 4+, the publisher 4 to 7. Read it aloud from 4. Say magic pebbles are pretend and we bring our wishes to God in prayer. The long search may worry a small child.
