The Agony and the Ecstasy

1965 · Carol Reed · Historical drama

Acceptable with guidance. Age: 13+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

The heart of this film is an artist learning that his gift is for God's glory and a pope who drives him to give it. The scene under the Creation of Adam, where both men talk about who God is, is worth the wait. The reservation is history: the script is largely invented, and Julius is more general than shepherd.

For parents

For teens and adults who like art and history. It is long and talky. The nudity is Michelangelo's art and nothing else. Ask: why did Michelangelo paint Adam and God the way he did? Was Julius a good pope, a good patron, or both? Then look up the real history together.
