The Blind Side
Acceptable with guidance. Age: 18+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.
Our review
Michael is a big, quiet teenager with no home. A rich family finds him out in the cold and takes him in. With their help he becomes a star football player and goes to college. It is a warm story of generosity, but the language is rough and the real people have since disputed what happened. The one age is 18, set by the Catholic classification A-III; the MPAA says PG-13 and Common Sense Media 11.
For parents
One age: 18, set by the Catholic classification A-III (adults), per the USCCB capsule quoted by domlife.org. The MPAA rating is PG-13 and Common Sense Media says 11+. Common Sense rates language A lot, including one use of the N-word by White characters; Plugged In counts about six "ass", four or five each of "b--ch" and "h---", God's name misused a handful of times, and crude terms for sex. A gang leader makes sexual insinuations about Leigh Anne and her daughter; a married couple kisses before implied sex; recruiters take Michael to a bar with partial nudity, not shown. A fight in a drug dealer's apartment nearly leads to gunfire, and Michael's mother is a drug user. Correct one thing: the film presents an adoption, but Wikipedia reports Oher's 2023 lawsuit saying it was a conservatorship, which a judge ended and ordered references to adoption removed. The Tuohys dispute his claims; their lawyer called them "hurtful and absurd" (per Wikipedia). Talk about it: What does the Gospel say about welcoming the stranger? Was Michael helped, or used, and how can we tell?
