The Great Escape

1963 ยท John Sturges ยท War

Acceptable. Age: 8+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

Soldiers are kept in a prison camp during a war. They work together to dig secret tunnels and escape. A few get free, but many are caught. This is a classic adventure about loyalty and teamwork under hardship. There is nothing here a parent must correct, though the ending is sad. The one age is 8, set by Common Sense Media.

For parents

Best for 8 and up. Common Sense Media sets the age at 8+; the USCCB rated it A-I. Know that one prisoner is shot climbing the fence and fifty recaptured men are executed near the end. There is drinking of homemade moonshine and lots of smoking. Talk about how the men shared risks and cared for weaker friends. Ask: what does loyalty cost? Who in the camp was a true friend?
