The Greatest Story Ever Told

1965 · George Stevens · Biblical epic

Acceptable with guidance. Age: 6+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

This is a slow, reverent life of Christ that takes his divinity seriously. The raising of Lazarus and the Resurrection carry real awe, and the Passion is restrained enough for older children. The reservation is accuracy. The script adds scenes and lines not in the Gospels and softens Judas, who says he does not want the money.

For parents

Kids about ten and up, in two or three sittings. Keep a Bible open. Ask: what did the film add or change? Read Matthew 26 and 27 on Judas and the silver, and correct the film there. Preview the massacre of the innocents and the Crucifixion for sensitive children.
