Our review
Helen Keller cannot see, hear or speak, and she acts wild because no one can reach her. A young teacher named Annie comes to help. Annie never gives up, and one day Helen finally understands words. This is a powerful true story about patience, firm love and the dignity of a child everyone else had given up on. Annie Sullivan is shown as a tough Catholic from Boston whose discipline brings hope to the Kellers. Expect long, harrowing physical struggles between teacher and child. The one age is 10+, set by Common Sense Media, with Decent Films placing it at Kids & Up.
For parents
Our one age is 10+, set by Common Sense Media. Decent Films agrees, calling it Kids & Up. There is no Catholic classification on file. The fights between Annie and Helen are long and rough, and Wikipedia notes the famous dining room struggle lasts nine minutes. Sensitive children may need you close by. Things to talk about: the Kellers love Helen but pity her, and pity keeps her trapped. Annie loves her enough to be firm. Ask: why did Annie refuse to let Helen eat with her hands? Is it ever loving to say no? Every person has a soul and a mind made for truth, even when no one can see it. What did Helen want most once she understood words?
