The Mother-Daughter Book Club

2007 · Heather Vogel Frederick · Middle-grade contemporary fiction

Acceptable with guidance. Age: 10+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

A gentle school-year story about mothers and daughters reading Little Women together. Rivals become friends, mean behavior is faced and forgiven, and a separated family comes back together. Faith never appears. The reservations are mild: crushes and a first dance at eleven, mothers mocking another mother's figure, and happy endings that come more by luck than by effort.

For parents

Read aloud from 9, independent reading from 10. Common Sense Media says 9 and up. It suits a real mother-daughter reading pair. Ask which March sister each girl is most like, and why. Ask what it takes to forgive someone who has been mean to you (CCC 2843).
