The Mysterious Benedict Society

2007 · Trenton Lee Stewart · Middle-grade adventure mystery

Acceptable with guidance. Age: 10+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

A clever puzzle adventure built on friendship and a love of truth. The children refuse to cheat on the entrance test, resist a villain who controls minds by feeding fear, and save one another at real cost. The reservation is the lying. Mr. Benedict, the good guide, teaches them to lie and cheat for the mission, and the story treats it as fine.

For parents

Read aloud from 8, independent reading from 10. Common Sense Media and Plugged In say 9 and up. Ask whether a good goal can make a lie right; the Church says no (CCC 2485). Ask how the Whisperer used fear, and where real peace comes from.
