The Ox-Bow Incident

1943 ยท William A. Wellman ยท Western

Acceptable with guidance. Age: 13+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

Angry men in a western town think three strangers did a murder. They hang them without a fair trial. Then they learn the men were innocent. This is a short, powerful film about mob justice and the courage to stand against it. The hanging of innocent men and a suicide need a parent to talk it through. The one age is 13, set by the Legion of Decency's A-II classification.

For parents

Best for 13 and up. The Legion of Decency's A-II sets the age; no Common Sense Media rating could be found. Three innocent men are hanged, and the posse leader takes his own life. Talk about why the crowd would not wait for the law, and why only a few voted for a trial. Ask: would you stand with the seven? Suicide is never the answer to guilt. Confession and mercy are. And we never give up hope for someone who takes his own life; the Church prays for them. We could not find a content log for this film, so our content levels are blank. Preview it first.
