The Robe
Recommended. Age: 6+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.
Our review
A proud Roman who helped crucify Christ is forgiven, converted, and ready to die for the faith. Guilt, mercy and martyrdom are shown plainly and reverently, and Christ is kept off screen. The reservation is depth. The story comes from a Lutheran pastor's novel, the conversion is thin, and Peter is far milder than the apostle of Scripture.
For parents
Good for kids about ten and up, watched with a parent. Expect heavy wine drinking, kisses, a slave market and a torture scene. Ask: what was really tormenting Marcellus, the robe or his guilt? Why does he choose death over denying Christ? Remind them a relic helps, but grace converts.
