The Rookie

2002 · John Lee Hancock · Sports drama (true story)

Recommended. Age: 7+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

This is a clean true story about a husband and father who keeps a promise to his players and chases a dream without leaving his family behind. His wife backs him, his team prays before the big game, and he forgives a distant father. The reservation is small. The message leans on chasing your dream more than on God's will, and there is mild language and casual beer.

For parents

For kids seven and up and the whole family. Expect a few mild words and adults drinking beer. Ask: why did Jim almost quit, and who helped him stay? What did it cost Jim to forgive his father? How do we know if a dream is from God?
