The Saturdays
Acceptable with guidance. Age: 8+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.
Our review
Four Melendy children live in New York City with their father and their housekeeper, Cuffy. They are bored on Saturdays. So they start a club and pool their allowances, and each child gets one Saturday to do something special. It is a bright, old-fashioned family story with no faith content that the sources mention. Mona spends her Saturday at a beauty parlor, which upsets her parents. Age 8+, set by the 8-11 range on Bookroo.
For parents
Age 8+, set by the low end of Bookroo's 8-11 range (SuperSummary gives 8-12). Read it aloud from 6. No Common Sense Media or Plugged In page was found. Per the School Library Journal post, Mona spends her turn at the beauty parlor, which distresses her parents, Oliver gets lost at the circus, and Randy meets Mrs. Oliphant. Wikipedia says one story involves an old woman 'kidnapped by gypsies,' a term now seen as offensive to Romani people, and a coal gas leak; I could not confirm these on another page, so read ahead. Ask: why would Mona's turn upset her parents?
