The Tale of Peter Rabbit

1902 · Beatrix Potter · Picture book, animal story

Recommended. Age: 6+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

A short, perfect story about disobedience and what it costs. Peter is told no, goes anyway, and pays for it with fear, lost clothes and a stomach ache. His mother puts him to bed with care, not anger. The one reservation is the opening line that Peter's father was baked in a pie, which can upset a tender three-year-old.

For parents

Read aloud from 3, independent reading from 6. Common Sense Media says 3 and up. Ask why Mrs. Rabbit said no to the garden. Was she being mean or keeping Peter safe? Ask what Flopsy, Mopsy and Cotton-tail got for supper and why. Soften the pie line if your child is sensitive.
