The Tree of Wooden Clogs

1978 · Ermanno Olmi · Historical drama

Recommended. Age: 13+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

This is Catholic life as poor farmers lived it: the rosary at night, Mass on Sunday, a priest who knows every family, a wedding blessed by nuns. Nothing is preached. Faith is simply the air these people breathe. The reservation is practical. It runs three hours, it is subtitled, and a pig is slaughtered on camera in full view.

For parents

For patient teens and adults. Younger children will be bored and the pig slaughter is graphic. One man is treated by a folk healer, so explain why Catholics turn to prayer and not charms. Ask: how does prayer shape this family's day? Was the father wrong to cut the tree, and was the landlord just?
