The Weight of a Mass: A Tale of Faith
Recommended. Age: 7+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.
Our review
This is the best picture book we know for teaching a small child what the Mass is worth. A scrap of paper marked 'One Mass' outweighs everything a rich baker owns, and a town that had stopped going to church goes back. The one reservation: a child may take the scale literally, so explain that the Mass is Christ's own sacrifice.
For parents
Read aloud from 4, independent reading from 7. The publisher says 5 and up. Read it the night before Sunday Mass. Ask why the paper was heavier than all the cakes. Then tell your child what happens at the altar: Jesus offers himself to the Father for us (CCC 1367).
