The Winged Watchman

1962 · Hilda van Stockum · Historical fiction (World War II)

Recommended. Age: 10+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

This is a Catholic family living the works of mercy at the risk of their lives. They hide the hunted, share food in a famine, pray, and go to confession. A Catholic convert wrote it, and the faith is part of the house, not a lesson. The one reservation is that the family deceives Nazi soldiers to save lives, and a child will ask about that.

For parents

Read aloud from 8, independent reading from 10. Seton offers it in grade 6. Ask why the family risks everything for a child who is not theirs. Then take up the hard one: is keeping a secret from a murderer the same as lying? Read CCC 2488-2489 together first.
