Thimble Summer
Acceptable with guidance. Age: 10+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.
Our review
Garnet is a nine-year-old farm girl who finds a silver thimble just before the rain ends a long drought. Good things keep happening all summer, so she thinks the thimble is magic. A new boy joins the family, the barn is rebuilt, and her pig wins a ribbon at the fair. It is a gentle, wholesome story, though Garnet's belief in a lucky thimble is worth a short chat. Age 10, set by Penguin Random House's 10-and-up publisher age (Bookroo says 8-12; the higher publisher age wins).
For parents
Age 10, set by Penguin Random House's publisher age of 10 and up (Grade 5 and up); Bookroo lists 8-12, and Lumen's own read-alone age is also 10. No Common Sense Media page could be fetched. Read it aloud from 7. Garnet thinks a thimble brought her good luck; the book leaves it open whether it is magic or coincidence. Ask: who really sends the rain and the good things in a summer? Thank God together. Both plot sources were partial, so skim it first if you want full certainty.
