The Velveteen Rabbit
Recommended. Age: 7+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.
Our review
A boy loves his toy rabbit so much that the rabbit hopes to become Real. When the boy gets sick, the doctor says his toys must be burned. A fairy comes, kisses the rabbit, and he becomes a real rabbit who lives in the forest. It shows that love is costly and makes us who we are. The Nursery Magic Fairy is fairy-tale make-believe, not a teaching about death or heaven. Recommended at +5. One age: 7+, set by Lumen's read-alone age; no Common Sense Media or publisher age was found.
For parents
Age 7+, set by Lumen's read-alone age. Read it aloud from 5. The boy's illness and the burning of the toys can upset a tender child. Say the Fairy is pretend. Ask how Jesus loves us all the way.
