The Very Hungry Caterpillar

1969 ยท Eric Carle ยท Picture book, concept

Acceptable. Age: 5+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

A tiny caterpillar is born and is very hungry. Each day it eats more food, and one day it eats so much junk that its tummy hurts. Then it eats a green leaf, builds a cocoon, and turns into a butterfly. A bright counting book with a gentle lesson about eating well. Nothing in it needs correcting.

For parents

Age 5+, set by Lumen's read-alone age. Read aloud from 1; Common Sense Media says 2 and up, the publisher 2 to 4. Ask why the caterpillar's tummy hurt, and what helps us stop when we have had enough. Thank God together for the fruit on the table.
