When Stars Are Scattered

2020 · Victoria Jamieson and Omar Mohamed · Graphic memoir

Recommended. Age: 10+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

A true story of a boy who loses nearly everything and keeps hoping. Omar cares for his brother, studies hard, gives thanks for small blessings, and leans on a camp neighbor who takes them in. It builds compassion for the poor and the stranger with real power. The one reservation is that Omar's Muslim faith is the book's only faith, so a parent should say how Christ fulfills what Omar longs for.

For parents

Not a read-aloud: it is a graphic memoir, best read alone from 10. Common Sense says 10 and up. The father's killing is remembered, not shown. Ask what Omar is grateful for when he has so little. Ask what Jesus says about welcoming the stranger (Matthew 25:35) and what our family can do for refugees.
