Winnie-the-Pooh

1926 · A. A. Milne · Children's classic, animal stories

Recommended. Age: 7+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

This is as safe and as good as a first chapter book gets. Pooh is a Bear of Very Little Brain and a very large heart. He gives away his own present to cheer Eeyore, and the friends forgive each other's foolishness without a fuss. The one reservation is small: God and prayer never appear, so the goodness here is natural, not yet Christian.

For parents

Read aloud from 4, independent reading from 7 or 8. The humor is dry, so read it slowly and enjoy it yourself. Ask why Pooh gave Eeyore the honey jar even though it was empty. Ask whether Rabbit was fair to Kanga and Roo, who were new to the forest.
