Wonderland
Acceptable with guidance. Age: 9+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.
Our review
A warm, gentle book about loneliness and friendship, told by two girls and a runaway dog. It moves the heart toward kindness for the old, the poor and the lonely. The reservation is the grown-ups: Mavis's mother is flighty, Rose's is a snob, and the girls break rules to do good. Talk about that with your child.
For parents
Read aloud from 8. A child can read it alone from about 9. Publishers Weekly says 8 to 12. Ask why Mr. Duffy is so sad, and what the girls do about it. Ask whether Rose could have helped him without breaking her mother's rules, and when we must tell a parent no.
